3. Over the Garden Wall

Over the Garden Wall is an animated miniseries that aired on Cartoon Network in 2014. The show was based on the animated short film (linked above) called Tome of the Unknown.

It’s a short, ten episode show about Wirt and Greg, who get lost in the strange woods by their home. As they progress further and further into the forest, they find themselves in a world called the Unknown.

For a show aimed at a younger audience, Over the Garden Wall is probably the darkest in tone out of the three on this list. Each episode has the brothers encounter different Unknown inhabitants, all the while they are stalked by a monstrous Beast he is intent on stealing their souls.

The charm of Over the Garden Wall is its whimsy, dark humor, and adult themes. It is another example of a cartoon that knew its story well and therefore offered plenty of symbolism, hints, foreshadowing, and clues. The ending is left ambiguous and you can find plenty of message boards from die-hard fans analyzing it and the entire story that preceded it.

I can’t recommend this show enough. I only wish there were more episodes, and longer ones at that! But I also wouldn’t want to ruin what made the series so spellbinding in the first place. The good thing is, it is infinitely rewatchable.

The entirety of Over the Garden Wall is available to stream on Hulu.
