9. Modern Family

When it premiered: Sept. 23, 2009

What it was about: Told in a documentary style, Modern Family takes us through the lives of a family. We get to see the different generations, the different personalities within the same family, and it’s all told through a hilarious lens.

Phil and Claire are two of the main focuses with their three children but there are also storylines that feature Claire’s dad and his younger wife Gloria and her brother with his partner and adopted daughter. This is a show that has something for everyone.

Why we loved it: The ABC comedy has certainly been a popular one, still on the air now. Part of the reason this was so great was because of the topical storylines. We had the straight couple, the gay couple, the multicultural couple, and much more. This was more than just a series but a look at life and how people can view individuals.

Of course, with it being a comedy, it can’t get too deep for too long. However, there are storylines that will leave you considering the way you react around and think of people.

Modern Family doesn’t try to take itself seriously though. The storylines tend to be over the top but they are hilarious and it’s become a guilty pleasure comedy for so many. Plus, with the documentary style filming, it’s something different to all the other scripted shows out there.
