GREY’S ANATOMY – (ABC/Mitch Haaseth) JESSE WILLIAMS, ELLEN POMPEO /

Jo is not coping at all in the wake of a traumatic discovery. Alex turns to an unlikely source for help in an all new Grey’s Anatomy.

Last week, Grey’s Anatomy delivered one of its most poignant and powerful episodes from its entire fifteen season run. But what Jo learned about her mother will have a profound impact on her life moving forward.

I know most fans are nervous about the status of #Jolex and it does appear this discovery will cause the first real rough patch in their marriage as Jo still hasn’t told anyone about what she found out. Let’s look at the 6 main takeaways from Season 16, Episode 20.

6. There are only 50 known cases of people with “golden” blood.

Alex gets a difficult case in peds this week as he has to find a way to help a young boy with autism who doesn’t like being touched. It’s hard enough to examine him, and made even more difficult by the discovery he has tumor and anemia. Maggie can operate on the tumor, potentially even fully cure him, but they have to manage his anemia first. The problem is, this boy has an extraordinarily rare blood type, Rhnull blood, nicknamed “golden” blood by scientists.

By episodes end, Alex is more determined than ever to help this kid out even though they’ve only found 4 potential donors… in the entire world thus far. Not only is this important to Alex because of his stake in the matter as a doctor, but he feels helpless at home with Jo. The struggle connect to her isn’t unlike his struggle to reach out to his patient.

5. Catherine is starting to feel like her old self again.

What is the perfect gift to get your mother who recently recovered from cancer? A penis, of course! Jackson secures a penis transplant for Catherine. The technique is the same as the one Meredith used to fix Megan Hunt’s stomach, the surgery that one her the Catherine Fox award.

The subplot actually gives us some nice Jackson and Meredith scenes, I like seeing these two together. In a way, they’re semi-siblings in their own right, due to their shared paternal bond with Richard. They even talk about forgetting their biological dads in favor of believing Richard is their real one. Though Meredith doesn’t end up doing a surgical assist, she’s done this long, complicated surgery already and “you don’t go to the moon twice!”
