Season 1, Episode 8 of Now Apocalypse is all about wish fulfillment and the exploration of the show’s central relationships. Here are the 3 major moments.

The latest episode of Now Apocalypse sees Severine try to convince Ford into helping her fulfill one of her greatest dreams. Carly takes Jethro to a BDSM dungeon and Ulysses and Isaac take their relationship to the next level. Let’s recap the 3 major moments from Season 1, Episode 8.

3. Severine fails to get her dream come true.

My eyes and ears popped out of my head for a second when I heard Sev say her fantasy was of being spit-roasted. It’s not out of character nor is not par for the course on a show of this nature but still, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the term and seen it attempted on television.

Alas, it doesn’t come to pass because neither Ford, nor Tyce (the other guy she invites), feel comfortable in the arrangement. This angers Sev because she feels like the powerhouse of sexuality is about male pleasure and she’s not wrong about that. There is an obvious way media skews sex to be male-centric and often to the degradation of women.

But she also isn’t quite as enlightened as she wants to be. For one, she actually tells Tyce he should be complacent in being an objectified sexualized prop and Tyce’s response is, “Are you seriously saying that, to a black guy?” Severine’s feminism certainly isn’t as intersectional as she pretends it is.

In addition to that, it probably would have been better for her and for her relationship had she discussed her plans with Ford beforehand instead of springing them on him.

2. Jethro and Carly take things to a new level.

Speaking of relationship issues, Carly and Jethro’s relationship reaches a breaking point this week. She takes him to an intense BDSM club to explore the continued heightened stakes of their sex life but it doesn’t take long for things to spiral out of control. My main issue with this scene was Carly ignoring Jethro’s safe word, which is a HUGE issue in terms of consent. It doesn’t happen until later in the episode but it occurs when Carly reaches the end of her rope in terms of Jethro not wanting to do things the way she wants to be done.

As the dominant presence in their relationship, she needs to be more considerate or break things off with Jethro for good. I find his character somewhat irritating and would rather them part ways and for Carly to be with someone who is more her speed rather than her trying to force Jethro to play a role he may or may not be fit for.

I think Now Apocalypse struggles a little with its messages of positive sexuality. Sometimes it’s fantastic and on-point and other times it totally misses the mark with its commentary.

1. Isaac gets a toothbrush.

For once it looks like Ulysses is having good luck in the romance department. He and Isaac are getting along really well and after spending the night together, even decide to continue seeing each other. Out of the three central relationships showcased this week, this one is clearly the healthiest.

It was actually a nice change of pace to see the one gay relationship being the most functional and mutually satisfying relationship in comparison to the two straight relationships being the ones with a great deal of issues to work out.

Let’s just hope Isaac doesn’t ghost Uly like Gabriel did but considering he already has his own personal toothbrush to keep in the bathroom, I doubt it.

Odds & Ends

  • I appreciated the little moment of frank talk about sexual health between Ulysses and Isaac.
  • “So are you like bi… or?” “Well I am an Aquarius.”
  • Isaac mentions there has been a recent epidemic of homeless people exhibiting signs of paranoid schizophrenia. Are they victims of alien abductions?

A new episode of Now Apocalypse titled, “Disappear Here”, premieres May 5th at 9/8c on STARZ.
