The pointless Aegon Targaryen revelation

One of the big questions on Game of Thrones was the identity of Jon Snow’s parents. They were revealed to be Rheagar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark at the end of Season 6 and fans cheered thinking Jon and Dany would later band together to ride some dragons and do some interesting Targaryan stuff. Unfortunately, all it did was serve as a reason to break them up.

I get the feeling that when Jon’s parentage was revealed in “Winds of Winter” there was a much larger story planned, but D&D probably scrapped it to save time. Now, in the context of the current plot, this discovery proves almost pointless.

It’s meant to be a big deal, but the way D&D carelessly treated it, like second-hand information not worth more than a few minutes of thought, it became somewhat forgettable. What was the point of the Targaryen secret child revelation? It does nothing save for widening the distance between Dany and her allies.

Does being the son of Rhaegar Targaryen really mean anything? So what if he has a slightly stronger claim to the throne than his aunt? King’s Landing is nothing but ashes now so who’s going to bother coming out and saying, “Excuse me, Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, first of your name, Breaker of Chains, the Unburnt, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Queen of Maureen, Lady of Dragonstone and Mother of Dragons, but that’s your nephew’s chair.”

The Targaryen’s were overthrown in Robert’s Rebellion and lost their claim on the throne. Their line of succession was eliminated once the Baratheons made a new dynasty, making Gendry the rightful heir.

If one thing is for certain, it’s that Westeros has no job security. Anyone can take the throne, all they got to do is kill the person sitting there and take their place. Dany’s obsession with Jon being the “rightful heir” makes no sense.
