Amanda accidentally bears witness to a haunting new side of the queen she never expected in the new episode of American Princess.

On episode three of American Princess, Amanda tries her hardest to win over Maggie, David plays an adorable coach to both Brian and Amanda, and the queen’s lady executioner makes her return to the Renaissance Faire. The executioner is a character we’ve already seen before and she could make Amanda’s life at the Faire very difficult if she chooses.

This was another excellent episode of American Princess and I had a difficult time narrowing down my favorite scenes to only five!

5. Amanda gets an eyeful of the Queen.

As if communal showers aren’t odd enough, Amanda accidentally disturbs Maggie’s private shower time and gets a look at her queen in the full monty. It sets the tone for a delightfully awkward string of encounters between these two women since all Amanda wants is to impress Maggie. Doing so will garner her better treatment in general around the fair and being liked by Maggie secures you certain job perks like getting to nap on her sheepskin rug.

She tries to make up for the shower situation by inviting Maggie to lunch but instantly messes it up when she launches into a spiel about all the things the fair needs to “fix.” Maggie sees right through Amanda and makes pointed, if cruel, remarks about her origins.

However, by episode’s end, Amanda has made a small stride to winning Maggie’s favor by throwing herself across a mud puddle to keep the queen from soiling her fancy garb. Baby steps!

4. David woos Amanda.

When the fair is over for the day, the cast likes to relax and hang out together around a bonfire. There was a scene this week showcasing the sense of camaraderie fostered by the Ren Faire environment. David starts a silly game wherein he tries to teach Amanda how to “woo” Maggie since she can’t seem to make a good impression on the queen.

It was hard not to swoon when Lucas Neff stood up and recited eloquent poetry about Maggie’s beauty and even harder not to cringe when Maggie did the same in return about David’s body. Once she slipped into talking about melanoma, she lost the crowd although none of that was as embarrassing as her ode to Maggie’s bush, which Maggie heard the tail-end of, super awkward.

3. Delilah helps Amanda realize something about herself.

Amanda has a bad habit of nitpicking everything. She likes to fix things that aren’t broken. It makes her appear pretentious and snobby. She leaps on every chance she gets to correct someone or flaunt her degree. Perhaps the worst demonstration of this bad habit is when she insults the local owner of an organic farmer’s market by chastising him on his store’s arrangement of merchandise.

Even the eternally positive Delilah can’t help but point out this fault in Amanda’s personality. As soon as she realizes it, she begins to see her similarities to her mother, which is horrifying. I think this is a turning point in Amanda’s character arc and hopefully, we’ll see her begin to mature as the season continues.

2. Brian learns how to loosen up.

As the Ren Faire’s resident Shakespeare impersonator, Brian books a stint on the local NPR radio station and bombs, spectacularly. The hosts riff on him and mock him relentlessly for boring all of their listeners by performing a soliloquy. He recruits David to accompany him back the following day. David helps Brian embrace the dirty side of Shakespeare, quite literally.

At one point, they’re advertising for the fair and Brian takes things too far by s****ting his pants! His mistake mortifies him. Except, at the fair, he’s embraced for doing something so bold. As David points out, Brian needs to find a balance. It appears he’s achieved it by the end of the episode when he manages to make the toughest audience, a couple of young boys, laugh instead of bully him.

1. Helen shows up in Amanda’s room.

In the premiere episode of American Princess, Amanda walked in on her then-fiance, Brett, receiving oral sex from a woman named Helen. In her anger, Amanda shoved Helen so hard she fell backward, smacked her head on a table and bit her tongue so hard she chewed through the tip of it and swallowed it. I didn’t anticipate seeing Helen again, but she shows up in the dead of night, hovering over Amanda’s bed in the dark.

At first, it appears Helen’s menacing presence is there to enact revenge, but instead, she wants to let Amanda know they’re square and talk about Brett’s tiny balls. Also, surprise, Helen is the missing lady executioner to the queen! We’ll be seeing a lot of Helen in the future. I’m not familiar with her actress, but she and her lisp stole the scene. I’m excited to see more of her.

Odds & Ends

  • I love when Maggie asked Brian if he had fun when they drank fuzzy navels and watched Call Me By Your Name.
  • Maggie calling The Canterbury Tales the “original 50 Shades.”
  • Is there such a thing as a radio host who isn’t incredibly obnoxious?
  • As the first season of American Princess gets underway, I’m realizing this is going to be one of the funniest series of the summer. I hope it’s doesn’t go as underrated as Lifetime’s other scripted series’.

New episodes of American Princess air Sunday nights on Lifetime.
