American Princess reunites Amadan with her old friends and they have some strong opinions about her new life at the Renaissance Faire.

Lackluster ticket sales for the Renaissance Faire force Lee to make a few changes to the fair in the latest American Princess. Lee isn’t the only one forced to confront things in his life that “aren’t working.” Amanda comes face-to-face with her old best friends for the first time since feeling her wedding.

Meanwhile, every character confronts the ‘Romeo’ in their life, for better or for worse. A few new relationships might be in bloom while at least one ends with a pool of vomit.

5. Maggie does a queenly pub crawl.

More from Drama

One of the new changes Lee implements is to eliminate high tea with the queen and replace it with a pub crawl. Maggie is insulted by the idea of hanging out with obnoxious drunkards for hours on end. The initial meeting starts with questions about pooping in a bucket and beer-chugging contests, much to Maggie’s disgust.

Once the alcohol starts flowing more freely, her attitude changes drastically. She bonds with her new temporary ladies-in-waiting until the night takes a turn for the morose, and Maggie gets onto the topic of her ex. Even her drunken wenches don’t want to stick around for that sobfest. Lee takes over caring for her, and in a moment of vulnerability on the queen’s part, he makes a startling love confession!

Maggie’s response is more physical than verbal. She throws up on the ground beside him. I’m going to guess he can take that as a no?

4. The wench auction.

Finally embracing the oddities of the fair, Amanda agrees to take part in the wench auction, much to the chagrin of Morgan. Initially, she tries to appease to Morgan’s sensibilities by claiming she is participating because she likes activities that feature “women supporting other women.” Ultimately, Amanda gives in to the whims of the crowd and dirty dances on stage with the best of them. David bids on her with ten sheep and take-out for two.

I admit, I forgot David had a girlfriend and was expecting this to be a date. Sadly, while the auction was a fun, flirtatious scene for Amanda and David, their night out is interrupted by his girlfriend, Callie, who wants him to join her in the hot tub. Maybe Amanda should have gone home with Lexi, who bid a macchiato.

3. Morgan makes her feelings known about the Faire.

I had an inkling Amanda’s friends weren’t visiting her purely out of the goodness of their hearts. Instead, Morgan, Nick, and Lexi were enlisted by Amanda’s mother to check on her. Nick and Lexi manage to have a good time and give in to the debauchery of the Ren Faire crowd. Morgan, on the other hand, is resilient at best. She doesn’t have any issue with letting Amanda know her real feelings about the fair and the toxic environment she believes it nurtures.

I did feel that Morgan made some fair points about how playing make-believe in a time when women were treated as objects can be demoralizing and play into the current social landscape, but I also agree with Amanda’s view that Morgan should let these grown adult women make that decision for themselves. Not to mention the fact that Morgan’s sanctimonious position was soured by the fact she was only there because Amanda’s mother requested it. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ll see of these three.

It was refreshing to see Morgan’s reasons for disliking the fair came from a legitimate moral place rather than because she felt above it all. It adds a layer of depth and complexity to what could have quickly become a shallow, one-dimensional character.

2. Brian and Juan take their relationship to the next step.

After several awkward encounters, Brian and Juan finally get on the same page and enjoy a movie night together. Initially, Brian tried to impress Juan with a few jokes, one of which wound up with him accidentally calling Juan Hitler. Then, on Maggie’s advice, he tried complimenting Juan’s homemade wares – only to break several.

Ultimately, these two figure things out, and their embarrassing courtship of one another is super adorable. They bond over the shared disdain of everyone’s mistaken translation of Romeo and Juliet before making out because as Juan points out, “I have enough friends.”

1. Amanda gets a surprising phone call from home.

During her serving wench duties, Amanda is hit on by a handsome jouster who offers her a rose, and a creepy kiss on the neck. Except Amanda doesn’t take it as creepy since she’s attracted to him. The two end up going for a romp in the hay. I guess she’s finally had her first official rebound in a post-Brett world!

But as she’s riding the high of her one night stand, she gets a phone call from Eryn. Amanda lays into her sister about her mother’s conniving plot to go behind her back and recruit her friends to spy on her, only for Eryn to cut her off and let her know their mom has overdosed and Amanda needs to go home ASAP. It’s a moment of genuine dramatic shock in a generally comedic series. How will Amanda feel if her mother doesn’t make it through this?

Odds & Ends

  • “What would Daniel Day-Lewis do?” “He’d retire.”
  • I found Morgan, Nick, and Lexi all endearing characters which surprised me because in most shows they’d be the type you would hate. They’re funny though and I would like to see more of them.
  • Lucas Neff is just so, so charming, isn’t he?

New episodes of American Princess air Sunday nights on Lifetime.
