The Rook is an ambitious new memory loss thriller on STARZ. We’re hashing out the most critical moments from the complicated premiere hour.

The latest prestige STARZ miniseries kicked off tonight with its debut episode. The Rook is a stylish spy thriller with a supernatural twist and complicated mythology.

Thrust into the streets of London post-massacre; audiences feel similar to Myfanwy Thomas who awakens to find herself surrounded by dead bodies with no idea how she got there or who she is. Over the first hour, we slowly begin to understand where Myfanwy came from and what challenges lie ahead for her.

As is typical with stories about memory loss, you must pay keen attention. It can be easy to get lost and confused in the series’ first episode due to lack of typical exposition. We’re highlighting some of the most important reveals to prepare you for the rest of the season.

5. Who is Myfanwy Thomas?

Myfanwy works for a top-secret British intelligence agency called Checquy. Myfanwy’s life is revealed to her, and us, by letters and videos Myfanwy left herself before her memory loss. She was aware she would be attacked and have her memory erased. But the question is who attacked her and why?

By following the scavenger hunt left behind by her past self, Myfanwy finds her apartment and looks through her things. She finds a secret alcove with more videos detailing her relationships with other Checquy agents and more.

She also finds a small box in her dresser with razor blades. It appears Myfanwy may self-harm, further evidence of this is in the scars on her upper thigh.

As far as Mfanwy’s personality goes, we don’t know much yet. She is lactose intolerant and deathly allergic to bees. According to her weird twin (triplet?) co-workers, she was also prone to being emotional, and maybe bisexual. She was intelligent enough to understand an attack was coming and prepare ahead. Beyond that, we don’t learn much else about her as a person.
