5. Wayward Pines (2015-2016)

Based on a book series of the same name by popular sci-fi author, Blake Crouch, Wayward Pine was a short-lived Fox television series executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan.

The series focuses on Matt Dillon’s character, a US Secret Service agent who is sent to the small, strange town of Wayward Pines to investigate the mysterious disappearance of two fellow agents. Weird happenings in a small town appears to be the secret ingredient to creating an intriguing series. Sadly, Wayward Pines was canceled after only two seasons.

That said, it manifested a loyal fan following during its brief time on the air. Plus, as far as Stranger Things connections go, the Duffer Brothers were part of the writing team for Wayward Pines. As fans of Stranger Things know, the Duffer Brothers are the masterminds behind creating the series.

One has to wonder if some of their inspiration came from working on this show first, and under the tutelage of a horror icon like M. Night Shyamalan.

In addition to Matt Dillon, Wayward Pines also starred Carla Gugino (The Haunting of Hill House), Toby Jones (Doctor Who), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight’s Tale), Reed Diamond (The Shield), Juliette Lewis (Ma), Terrence Howard (Empire), and Melissa Leo (The Fighter). Both seasons of Wayward Pines are currently available on Hulu!
