4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Created by Joss Whedon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the television show that helped launch both vampires and Sarah Michelle Gellar into stardom. Of course, vampires were already in the pop culture lexicon before this moment but not quite in the way Buffy helped establish.

There wouldn’t be a Vampire Diaries universe if Buffy didn’t pave the way. The series starred Gellar as Buffy Summers, a “slayer” chosen to battle the forces of evil. She and her friends try to stop the world from succumbing to the darkness of the world, particularly in their hometown of Sunnydale, which is located on top of a Hellmouth, a gateway to demonic realms.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was adapted from a cult film that debuted in the early 1990s. The series has surpassed the popularity of the film, however. It was so popular it even spawned a spin-off series, Angel, that ran for five seasons.

For Stranger Things fans, Buffy is a must-watch. There are notable inspirations from this show, especially in the assembly for characters and the humor. Buffy was known for its comedic moments alongside its genuine frights.

Sound familiar? It should. There’s no way the Duffers didn’t draw some inspiration from this iconic teen supernatural series. All seven seasons of Buffy are available on Hulu.
