3. The O.C.

Who’s in it: Peter Gallagher, Kelly Rowan, Ben McKenzie, Mischa Barton, Adam Brody, Chris Carmack, Tate Donovan, Melinda Clarke, Rachel Bilson, Alan Dale, Autumn Reeser, Willa Holland

What it’s about: What isn’t The O.C. about? That’s the real question. On the surface, it might seem like it’s a mere teen soap about privileged adolescents getting up to no good in Southern California. But it’s also about economic divides, class structures, and identity. Okay, so those themes are definitely present but not the totality of the series by a long shot. The O.C. presented itself as a light satire of teen dramas, while also supplying the generation-defining teen drama pop culture needed in the early aughts.

Why you should watch: You wouldn’t think that Dynasty and The O.C. are the most obvious match-up you could concoct for a binge-watching marathon. But the series share executive producers in Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and both feature actor Alan Dale in a supporting role. From a narrative standpoint, the series each break down the business going on in the bedroom and the boardroom and also exist within the same world of excess.

Obviously, The O.C.’s various outdated details — fashion, technology, culture, etc. — will probably appear foreign to Dynasty’s younger audience, and that’s why they should dive into this education of the Core Four, Chrismukkah, and #FreeMarissa (get it trending).

For the, ahem, older bunch of us tuning into Dynasty for the slice of throwback soap that prestige TV all but washed away, dipping back into The O.C. for a nostalgic binge will hit all the right notes. And, yes, most of those notes are the sweet indie tunes coming from Seth Cohen’s stereo.

Where you can watch: All four seasons are available to stream on Hulu.
