8. Short Term 12

Original Release Date:  August 23, 2013

Box Office Earnings: On the negative side, Box Office Mojo reports that Short Term 12 only made a little more than a million dollars at the box office. On the positive, this was a limited theatrical release movie with a microbudget of under a million dollars. It would’ve been nice to see it break out and earn a bit more, but it was never intended to break box office records with its debut.

Critical Acclaim: What the film lacks in box office receipts, it makes up for in critical acclaim. Sitting comfortably at a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film opened to widespread acclaim at SXSW, where it won the Grand Jury Narrative Feature Award and the Narrative Audience Award.

About the Role: In the film, Brie Larson plays Grace, a counselor at an at-risk youth center dedicated to helping the kids who have slipped through the cracks of the system, who forms a powerful bond with a new young girl at the facility, while juggling with problems in her personal life and secretly being in love with a co-counselor.

Simply the Best: Although it flew under the radar, Short Term 12 is one of Larson’s best films.  It’s emotional and enthralling the whole time, mostly because of Larson’s believable and empathetic lead performance. Most people probably haven’t heard of this movie, but it’s definitely one not to miss.
