4. YOU (2018 – present)

  • Starring: Penn Badgely, Elizabeth Lail, Shay Mitchell, Luca Padovan, and Zach Cherry

Based on the best-selling novel by Caroline Kepnes, YOU is a very dark and psychological thriller series that revolves around the creepiest character of the year, Joe (Badgley). Joe may look like your average bookstore clerk but underneath his nice-guy veneer, he’s an absolute weirdo and a stalker to boot.

All of this is established in the first episode so no spoilers! But the first season of YOU follows Joe as he attempts to wiggle his way into the life of his dream girl, Beck (Lail). It’s riveting TV, even if it makes you feel icky sometimes. Plus, You will officially be getting a second season which should be coming to Netflix sometime in the near future.

3. Russian Doll (2019 – present)

  • Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez, Charlie Barnett, and Elizabeth Ashley

Russian Doll is another series you should enjoy if the dark comedy aspects of In the Dark were appealing to you. This show is a little lighter than some of the others on this list, as it isn’t about death and murder, but it does involve its own tangled mystery.

Natasha Lyonne is brilliant as the main character, Nadia Vulvukov, who gets sucked into a Groundhog’s Day-esque time warp while attending her own birthday party. She has to figure out what is going on and how to stop it before something catastrophic happens. It’s a quick binge and you’ll be glad you watched it, especially if you can squeeze it in before the Emmy Awards since it was nominated for several!
