  • Starring: Mireille Enos, Joel Kinnaman, Billy Campbell, Michelle Forbes, Brent Sexton, Kristen Lehman, and Eric Ladin

The Killing is one of several series that Netflix has rescued from a network. At least you know you don’t have to worry about a terrible cliffhanger!

If you enjoyed In the Dark for its mystery element, then you should check out The Killing, which is a much darker murder mystery, crime drama. The series isn’t necessarily an anthology but each season does have a slightly different focus. The first two seasons are about the Rosie Larsen murders and the latter two seasons focus on different cases.

1. The Sinner (2017 – present)

Again, if you loved the mystery elements of In the Dark, The Sinner will be right up your alley. This is another series with a darker and more mature tone than In the Dark but the storylines are incredibly compelling. Unlike The Killing, The Sinner is a true crime anthology series. The first season focuses on a woman (played by Jessica Biel) who snaps one day and brutally murders a man on the beach.

She can’t explain why she did it and the detective on her case isn’t satisfied by her confession so he does some digging into her past to find out the truth. Season one is based on the book of the same name by Petra Hammesfahr.

Season two focuses on a young boy who poisons a couple, but the reasons behind his actions involve a cult and a story more sinister than anyone could have imagined. Carrie Coon leads the second season. The series has been renewed for a third season which is set to star Matt Bomer.
