6. East Los High

The story: East Los High was revolutionary for the fact the entire series revolves around an entirely Latino cast and crew. It was mostly filmed on location in East Los Angeles too. If you like All American for the fact it has an incredibly diverse cast and isn’t afraid to tackle heavy, sometimes political issues, then East Los High will appeal to you.

The series focuses on two teen cousins, Jessie and Maya. They’re both as opposite as can be. Jessie is ambitious and concentrates solely on her studies. She doesn’t have much of a social life and no romantic life to speak of whereas Maya is tugged immediately into a love triangle with a popular jock named Jacob.

Maya seems to attract trouble wherever she goes. Throughout the first season, Maya and Jessie must face the various perils of being a young adult such as drugs, sex, cheating, peer pressure, and more. As the series continues, it becomes more of an ensemble with a large cast of characters for you to care about. It is also comparable to popular Canadian series, Degrassi: The Next Generation.

The series aired for four seasons before getting canceled but Hulu produced an extended series finale to follow-up the fourth season and wrapped up storylines accordingly.
