New Amsterdam Season 2 will be here at the end of the month. It’s time to get answers to our burning questions. Here’s what we know so far.

After that cliffhanger at the end of New Amsterdam Season 1, we’ve all been waiting for the second season. Thank the world that the show was renewed ahead of the finale, right? New Amsterdam Season 2 will be here at the end of the month, and it’s time to look at what we know so far.

We’re not going to get the answers to our burning questions—the most important one being who survived the ambulance crash. However, there are images that help us speculate and we do have some confirmed bits and pieces.

Who is in danger in the New Amsterdam Season 2 premiere?

More from NBC

The finale put five lives at risk: Max, Sharpe, Bloom, Georgia, and baby Luna. It looks like Max and Luna are going to be just fine. They’ll be shook up and have minor injuries, but they have been spotted in some of the promo features. Plus, Max is the lead character so there’s no way anything can happen to him.

So that leaves Georgia, Bloom, and Sharpe at risk of exiting the series. Who will it be?

My guess is on Georgia. It forces Max to fight for more when it comes to his cancer. He’ll be forced to look after himself and sometimes take a step back from the hospital, which means some major character development.

Bloom and Sharpe (well, Janet Montgomery and Freema Agyeman) were at the NBC Upfronts. While this could have been just a ploy to make us believe both will be safe, there were plenty other cast members who could have been invited along. It suggests both will make it through the premiere.

A promo for New Amsterdam Season 2 tells us that one isn’t going to survive. And I’m assuming this means one of the main characters we’ve come to know and love. There is footage of paramedics covering a body on the ground but I think this is one of the paramedics from the cast. Other footage shows Georgia, Sharpe, and Bloom make it to the hospital.

Expect plenty of flashbacks

There will be flashbacks throughout the New Amsterdam Season 2 premiere. It all starts a few months after the crash. We’ll likely see Max but I doubt we’ll see the other characters until the flashbacks play out and tell us who died and who survived. The only other characters we’ll see are the ones we know weren’t involved in the crash.

The Season 1 finale didn’t leave us with just the crash, after all. All characters went through some sort of development throughout the first season, whether it was realizing that their opinions of their children affected relationships or whether they realized they needed to take a step back from the way they work with their patients.

Floyd and Evie got engaged at the end of the Season 1 finale, but the celebrations were quickly stopped by the accident. Will they still be together considering Floyd’s feelings for Bloom? How will they deal with the knowledge Floyd’s family isn’t exactly the most accepting of Evie since she’s nothing like Floyd’s mother and the visions of a wife and family growing up?

And, of course, we can’t overlook Max’s cancer. We knew he couldn’t die, but the show is going to delve into that storyline in a different way in the second season.

Patient-driven storylines

Like the first season, there will be patient-driven storylines after we move on from the first episode. We’ll get to see the world of U.S. medicine through the eyes of these patients, many of whom can’t afford the medical treatment, which is why they end up at New Amsterdam.

There are going to be some topical and diversive subjects. Expect storylines on vaccinations, abortions, and more. These are all topics currently in the news and they are can be controversial. The idea isn’t to pick a side and fight for it but to offer both sides of the argument and help people make more informed decisions.

Any new cast members in New Amsterdam Season 2?

Apart from the characters whose lives are on the line, most of the original season cast members are returning. That’s great, but there are also new actors joining the series.

TVLine reports that Ana Villafañe will join the series as Dr. Valentina Castro. She’s Max’s new oncologist, which certainly links to the idea that Max is getting more serious about his cancer treatment.

Dr. Castro was mentioned in the first season. After Sharpe decided to be Max’s doctor again, she wanted Max’s records to be sent to Dr. Castro. That suggests she wanted to work closely with the oncologist. Of course, now Sharpe is in limbo.

Does this suggest Sharpe won’t be returning? Not yet! After the accident, she’d need time to recover if she does survive. Passing things onto Dr. Castro, for now, would make sense. There is certainly going to be some interesting storylines and I’m assuming Sharpe survives. Sharpe let Castro go from the hospital years ago, which suggests some bad blood.

Ian Duff will also get a recurring role as Michael Duke. He’s Floyd’s newest intern, who is naturally gifted but he’ll also have a lot to learn. What’s the betting that he’ll be a little like Sandra Oh’s Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy—gifted but arrogant?
