9. Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-2015)

Original Release Date: Before Degrassi: The Next Generation there was Degrassi Junior High, and Degrassi High. The Next Generation initially premiered October 14, 2001. It ended in 2015 but was then revived as a sequel series, Degrassi: Next Class, on Netflix.

Rating Achievements: Degrassi: The Next Generation was a huge show in Canada. It did well enough in the ratings to continue on for 14 seasons after all the other spin-offs. Degrassi is is just the franchise that keeps on going.

Critical Acclaim: During its run, Degrassi: The Next Generation received critical praise for the way it tackled important issues for young people. It also won many awards.

About the Role: This was Nina Dobrev’s big television break. She portrayed the role of Mia Jones, a teenager who gets pregnant at the age of 13. She begins to raise her daughter, Isabella, as a teen mom with help from her own mother.

Simply the Best: Dobrev was very young when she took the role of Mia, but I still felt endeared by her character. She’s still one of my favorites from the show. Mia struggled to juggle quite a bit with growing up as a teenager while still trying to be a mother. Dobrev had to handle her fair share of dramatic material, and she did a great job with it.

Eventually, Dobrev landed the Vampire Diaries and had to be written off the show. Mia went off to pursue a modeling career in France.
