This year’s Emmy award’s most outstanding actors and actresses are the ones who have displayed their talent and knocked the ball out the park.

Being nominated for an Emmy is just half the battle for TV’s most talented actors and actresses. The plethora of shows and shining stars to compete with makes it is just as hard to be the one that actually wins the award. It is, for this reason, that time and time again the greatest and brightest on TV don’t take home the gold because the competition is fierce and plenty.

We might as well cross our fingers and hope that our favorites win because the Emmy winners aren’t always the most obvious. And for the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards there are some extraordinary talents in each category.

Undeniably, the competition is steep. But out of everyone, there a few nominees that stand out as most deserving despite how fickle the Emmys can be.

1. Billy Porter – Pose

Billy Porter portrays Pray Tell on Pose with grace and absolute confidence. Porter’s ability to portray a leader with such a complicated life and still show pride and vulnerability is a work of art. He’s a nominee that more than deserves his nomination.

2. Emilia Clarke – Game of Thrones

After a full run on Game of Thrones, Clarke has yet to receive an award for her outstanding performance. This final season of Game of Thrones doesn’t only show that Clarke can play multiple sides of a character, it highlights Clarke’s best work yet.

3. Sandra Oh – Killing Eve

The fact that the Academy has been passing up the opportunity to award Sandra Oh for Grey’s Anatomy and the first season of Killing Eve makes this award super important. Oh is the nexus of Killing Eve and its intrinsic tale of agent and assassin trying to see who catches who first. And it’s about time she’s recognized for her work.

4. Phoebe Waller-Bridge – Fleabag

The hilarious British comedy Fleabag caught a lot of viewers off guard in the way that its humor, darkness, and overall frankness could do so much more than being funny. And Waller-Bridge as the narrator and leading woman has made an impressive contribution to what makes Fleabag such a fantastic show.

5. Jharrel Jerome – When They See Us

The devastating tale of Korey Wise didn’t just place Jharrel Jerome in a cell to experience prison life, it took him to solitary and the aftermath of the trauma. Jerome told the heartbreaking real-life story in the most believable way he could.

6. Gwendolyn Christie – Game of Thrones

Christie had to nominate herself, but the world is in agreement with how much she deserves to be in the running for her work in the final season of Game of Thrones. Christie displayed a fascinating performance that showed how her character came full circle.
