5. Coraline

Admittedly, the first film to make my list is just a little bit creepy. Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, Coraline is a pretty underrated Halloween film for both kids and adults alike. The film follows our main character, Coraline Jones, as she finds a door that takes her to a parallel universe in which she has seemingly everything she wants until she finds out that everything is not what it seems.

As previously mentioned, this film does feature some creepy scenes. How scary? As far as creepiness goes, the scenes in questions are not very upsetting, but definitely don’t shy away from things. It can get spooky, but not much!

Of course, the major creep factor in this movie comes via the Other Mother. No spoilers, but the Other Mother is such an interesting character that you won’t want to stop watching as soon as she’s introduced.

Looking at the film as a whole, it’s basically Coraline realizing that not everything is always as great as it seems. It’s a lesson that’s great for kids to learn and one that some adults even forget about. As far as non-spooky films go, Coraline is one that you shouldn’t miss because it has beautiful animation, a compelling cast of characters and tells an unforgettable story that you don’t want to miss.

Where to watch: If you’re planning on watching this one, you’re in luck! Coraline is streaming on Netflix.
