Halloween 2019: 5 non-spooky movies to watch
4. Coco
The next film is one that isn’t a traditional Halloween film but still gives some Halloween vibes if you’re looking for something different. Released in 2017, Coco is Disney’s take on the Mexican holiday, Día de Los Muertos (or Day of the Dead). Of all the films on the list, this one is probably the biggest curve-ball, but is still a good choice if you’re going for more of a non-traditional route.

Coco follows our main character Miguel as he gets transported to Land of the Dead and must get a blessing before the sun rises on Dia de Los Muertos so he can get back to his family. If not, Miguel will be stuck there forever. While the film can take on serious tones at times, there is also a lot of fun moments especially with the music, Miguel’s dog Dante, and all of the beautiful vibrant colors featured in the film. Considering that this film was a recent watch for me, I just want to gush about it.
Getting into why it’s a great non-spooky film, the majority of the film is told in the Land of the Dead so there are skeletons aplenty. Coco also features a few unsavory moments especially centered around the character of Ernesto De La Cruz so it’s slightly creepy in that regard. As previously noted, this isn’t a traditional Halloween film but Coco is a good one if you want something non-spooky.
Where to watch: Coco is streaming on Netflix.
