Best of the 2010s in 2018: Lucy and Wyatt, “Lyatt,” from Timeless

There’s nothing quite like the painful irony of Timeless‘ Lyatt. This couple had the ability of time travel and, therefore, should have had plenty of time to be together; but shippers were cursed with only seeing Lucy and Wyatt together for two short seasons, plus a wrap-up movie finale. It wasn’t fair—and never will be—but this couple’s chemistry, almost instant ability to connect with and support one another, and odds-defying return from cancellation solidifies it as one of the best of the 2010s.

2018 gave shippers everything from the couple’s initial night together in “Hollywoodland,” to the angst of Wyatt’s dead wife’s return. Whether it was saving time itself from Rittenhouse or comforting one other through the pain of loss, Lyatt defined what it meant to be stronger together in every sense of the phrase. Even when the romantic side of their relationship seemed to be destroyed because of Jessica’s sudden resurrection, Lucy and Wyatt still had each other’s backs when and where it counted most. Besides, especially with the knowledge that our journey with them was going to be all-too-brief, plenty of Timeless viewers knew it was only a matter of, well, time before they found their way back to one another.

When the series was canceled after the first season, Timeless fans rallied to revive it; with another cancellation after the second, The Time Team seemed to be all out of miracles. But, at least in part thanks to Lyatt, there was just enough magic left in the tank to get some closure and the happily-ever-after this best of the 2010s choice deserved.
