#3 – Jo’s mental health awareness

Long-term storytelling is one thing that has attracted myself, and I’m sure many others, to Grey’s Anatomy. Jo Karev’s mental health journey is a powerful one that is refreshing to see on television, and I’m glad it’s getting a bigger spotlight after being touched on over the last few years.

The Season 16 premiere opened with her checking into a psychiatric facility for a month so she could work through the trauma of learning her father raped her mother, on top of her other battles with depression and domestic abuse.

In Episode 5, “Breathe Again,” Jo, who is now an attending general surgeon, winds up treating one of her therapists, Carly, with the help of Bailey. Throughout their scenes, we were treated to flashbacks of Jo and Carly’s therapy sessions where Jo learned how to manage her trauma and set boundaries. This was a huge turning point for her character and would set up Jo and Alex officially getting married in the following episode.

Jo’s new storyline was introduced in the fall finale when she became a safe haven volunteer to care for babies dropped off at Station 19. Based on the way she was mesmerized by the baby she cared for throughout the episode, we should’ve known Jo would end up taking the baby home! Only her and Link know about it, so I can’t wait to see how Alex reacts to this.
