It’s the time of year when people make New Year Resolutions. Here’s a look at the resolutions Sam Winchester should probably make on Supernatural in 2020.

As it’s the time of year that we tend to make New Year Resolutions, it’s the time of year I like to look at the resolutions the Supernatural characters should probably make. I’ve already looked at Dean’s resolutions, so now it’s time for Sam’s.

Sam has actually had a relatively strong season so far. He’s not been knocked out too many times (and one of those was understandable and brought up an interesting plot development). He’s also been focused on dealing with the big bad, something that he has lost sight of in the past when there are no fresh clues.

Yet, there’s still some potential growth. Here are five resolutions he should make.

5. Stop feeling guilty over his actions

Poor Sammy was the one to kill Rowena. He didn’t want to do it and he felt awful for it for episodes later. In fact, when he got the chance to see Rowena in Hell, he even tried to apologize.

It’s time for him to stop feeling guilty over this. He was destined to kill her and she certainly doesn’t hold a grudge against him. In fact, she left him (and Dean) all her spells. There’s a bond between them that can’t be unbroken and he did what he needed to do. It hurts, but he is allowed to stop feeling guilty.

4. Continue to open up to people

I love that he has started to open up. When he figured out what his nightmares were, he admitted them to Dean. We didn’t get a season of him trying to hide things like we’ve had in the past.

He needs to keep doing this. Whether it’s Castiel, Dean, or even Eileen, I want to see Sam continue to open up to people on Supernatural in 2020.

3. Remind Dean they’ve both made major mistakes in the past!

Dean is being a bit of a jerk to Castiel. I completely understand why, but the grudge against his best friend is going on a little too long. It’s not like Dean is Mr. Perfect all the time!

Sam is going to have to remind Dean about this. Remind Dean of all the mistakes both of them have made, of the people who had died because of the secrets they’ve kept, sometimes from each other.

2. Don’t feel the need to sacrifice himself

Sam tends to feel the need to sacrifice himself for the world. There are many who fear that he’ll be the one to die at the end of Supernatural Season 15 (although I think Dean might be the one to die if either of them has to).

What I don’t want is Sam to think he has to sacrifice himself. There has to be another way to deal with the situation.

1. Allow himself to be happy

Sam needs a chance to be happy. Whether that’s with Eileen or not doesn’t really matter at this point. I just want to see him be able to smile. We’ve started to see it with Eileen around. He’s been able to relax a little. Now he needs to allow himself to be happy.

That’s part of the problem. Sam doesn’t think he deserves happiness. The amount he’s done for the world, he deserves that happiness.
