8. Maleficent (2014)

Original Release Date: May 30, 2014

Box Office: Maleficent blew all expectations out of the water when it earned $758.5 million at the box office, hence why it earned a sequel.

Critical Acclaim: Unfortunately, despite excellent audience reviews and a high box office return, critics didn’t love Maleficent. Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie were praised for their chemistry and acting, but critics felt the story was lacking something.

About the Role: Elle played the innocent and sweet Princess Aurora, daughter to the arrogant and cruel King Stefan. However, eventually, she becomes an adoptive daughter to Maleficent after the two begin to form a bond while in the Moors. Elle was cast because she excelled at playing a naive and magnetic character who seemed to ooze sweetness.

Simply the Best: Maleficent tells the story of the iconic Disney villainess and her origins before Sleeping Beauty and throughout the notable fairytale. We get to see the story of Aurora play out from Maleficent’s perspective instead of Aurora’s. It focuses on its female leads while building a heartwarming relationship between Aurora and Maleficent.

It also gives us a rich backstory for Maleficent’s history and origins. It may have some faults, but overall, the movie was a blast to watch and quite stunning to look at.
