7. King Lear

Original Release Date: May 28, 2018

Box Office: King Lear was a television film that premiered on BBC Two and then on Amazon Prime.

Critical Acclaim: The film was highly praised by critics who found it very watchable and were particularly impressed by the leading performances from Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. The film was nominated for several awards, including a Primetime Emmy.

About the Role: Cordelia is one of King Lear’s three daughters, who Florence Pugh portrays in the television film. Cordelia denies taking part of her inheritance when the king chooses to split up the kingdom.

Simply the Best: If you’ve read King Lear, the famous play written by William Shakespeare, then you’ll know what to expect from this film. There have been multiple adaptations in the past. This particular version is a little more recognizable thanks to big-name actors like Hopkins and Thompson.

Florence is excellent as Cordelia, who is the ostracized daughter that neglects to take her inheritance, leaving her with nothing while her two sisters prosper with the inheritance split between them. Even if you haven’t heard of the story before, this is an excellent adaptation with a fantastic cast. Emily Watson, Jim Broadbent, Jim Carter, Andrew Scott, Tobias Menzies, and Christopher Eccleston also star.
