The Blind Side (2009)

Struggling teen Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) is living life day by day. He switches homes frequently, and his life is lacking stability. When enrolled in Wingate Christian School, he develops a friendship with a boy named Sean Jr. (Jae Head).

Unknown to Michael, Sean Jr.’s mother Leigh Anne Touhy (Sandra Bullock) notices him on a road alone and invites the teen to stay at her house. Slowly, Michael develops a close relationship with the Touhy family, who in turn train him to be a better student and make a run at football.

When Leigh Anne and her husband Sean (Tim McGraw) decide they want to adopt Michael, the teen must decide what’s best for his future, choosing to stay with the Touhys or his biological mother. The Blind Side follows the true story of NFL player Michael Oher.

Coach Carter (2005)

Based on a true story, Coach Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) decides to return to his high school in Richmond, California to turn around their basketball program. Carter’s no-nonsense regime of coaching and training is met with disapproval by the undisciplined players on the team. With most players coming from troubled lives, Carter has his work cut out for him, but eventually reaches through to his team to play ball with sportsmanship and respect.

However, when the players revert to their old ways, with some in peril of failing classes, Carter boldly does a lockout with his undefeated team to prove that being disciplined and successful in school is just as important as in basketball. The coach’s decision is met with stark disapproval and may jeopardize the lives of the players–unless they do something about it themselves.

Coach Carter remains one of the most moving sports movies to date. This film also stars Channing Tatum, Ashanti, Rick Gonzalez, and Rob Brown.
