George and May are part of a cult

Since Uncle George was unsuccessful at bringing Leanne home, May showed up to coax the girl. In an awkward introduction, May met Dorothy, and something familiar clicked in Dorothy’s head. Later, Dorothy ran through her reports and found that she had recognized May because she was the ringleader of a cult that had initiated a standoff she reported on.

Leanne in all likelihood has powers

One thing is for sure, George and May haven’t been fervently stalking Leanne because they miss their niece. Their desperate efforts to bring her back home and consequently to their cult are more about what Leanne can do. May’s tactic at negotiating Leanne back home is to mention that the Turner’s don’t deserve Leanne’s gifts, while cradling Jericho in her arms. May doesn’t want Leanne spending her divine energy on the Turner’s when she could use her miracles for the cult’s fanatical objectives.

Leanne punished Sean

Uncle George also revealed to Sean that when Leanne is angry bad things happen. He asks Sean what has happened to him that he believes Leanne caused, and Sean mentions he can’t taste food and the wood splinters. They all started when Leanne came to the house, during which Sean spent most of that time in her opposition. It suggests that Leanne’s emotions and perception can negatively fuel her powers causing accidents like Dorothy’s food poisoning.
