5 wildest moments from Lifetime’s Murder in the Suburbs

ONTARIO, CA - MAY 23: New houses line the street in the Inland Empire, the area east of Los Angeles, in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, May 23, 2003 in Ontario, California. The high cost of housing in the Los Angeles area has many Angelinos opting for lower priced new homes in the counties to the east and commuting long distances on often-jammed freeways to get their jobs in L.A. Angelinos reportedly have the nation's longest cummutes and worst traffic. A Census Bureau survey released May 19 reports that about 782 people moved to the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan area, already the nation's most populated at nearly 9.5 million, each day in 2001. The 2001 total was more than 285,000. (Photo by David McNew/Getty Images)

A group of teens discovers that a pact they made during the town’s annual harvest festival has deadly consequences in Lifetime’s Murder in the Suburbs.

Murder in the Suburbs asks the question: What happens when a few rowdy teens get behind the wheel of a red SUV after drinking excessively? Exactly what you think will happen. After getting into an accident that leaves three bodies and a grieving mother behind, a group of teenagers agrees to make a pact to take the secret of their hit-and-run to the grave.

Unfortunately for them, they don’t seem to realize that secrets of that magnitude can never stay secret for long, especially not when you exist in the Lifetime universe. The following list details some of the wildest moments from the movie.

5. The opening scene.

Murder in the Suburbs opens with an intense scene featuring several heavily intoxicated teenagers and a car crash. We meet the main cast, which features Katie Pruitt and her pals Rick Rhodes, Nikki Leeds, and Jared Hale. Katie gets extremely drunk, leading her boyfriend Rick and their friend Jared to take her home.

Unfortunately, Rick is also under the influence when he gets behind the wheel of the car. He crashes into Megan Myers on the road, and the resulting accident kills her husband and kids. Rick, being the jerk that he is, decides he doesn’t want to risk getting into trouble and calling the cops. So he abandons Megan and leaves the scene of the crime.

4. Katie and Luke share a tender moment at a party.

This moment wasn’t wild in the sense that it was crazy, more so that I was surprised to see it in the movie. It was a genuinely touching scene between two siblings mourning the loss of their father. In the broader context of the film, the subplot wasn’t necessary, but it was still a sweet moment and gave us a little more backstory on the Pruitt family.

3. Jared gets rowed to death.

Rick did a great job at channeling his inner I Know What You Did Last Summer serial killer vibes. Poor Rick was out rowing his kayak at the crack of dawn when he noticed a big ship headed right toward him.

The camera cuts away before the actual death takes place, but Murder in the Suburbs heavily implies that Jared was mowed down by the boat and left to drown.

2. Nikki’s hot tub death scene.

For a second, I thought Lifetime was going to get more creative than usual and use a slasher movie tactic of boiling Nikki in the hot tub by cranking up the heat. (Hey they did it on Riverdale, and actor Trevor Stines — Jason Blossom — is the killer in this movie).

Instead, Nikki gets strangled! I admit, by the time her death scene rolled around, I thought Katie might have been the killer. She looked weirdly suspicious when Nikki left her house after finding out the truth of their pact.

1. Rick kidnaps Katie.

As basically all Lifetime movies end, we knew Katie would eventually get kidnapped or almost murdered. Rick savors his time with Katie by capturing her and tying her up in a basement. Had he just been trying to dispose of her, he could have done so as quickly as he did the other two. Instead, he draws it out for the sake of the plot, of course. Katie’s mom and Megan manage to show up in time to rescue her from Rick’s evil clutches.

All three women get involved in the fight before Megan shoots Rick but decides not to kill him. “I promised my children justice, not vengeance,” she sees in total seriousness. The film ends with Megan happily becoming part of the Pruitt family, and maybe it was just me, but it seemed like there was a strong implication that Megan and Amy Pruitt were now happily involved in a relationship. I don’t care of the filmmakers intended that or not, that’s what I’m saying happened.
