9. The Kids Are All Right

Original Release Date: July 9, 2010

Box Office Earnings: Domestically, The Kids Are All Right has a total of $20.8 million, while attracting another $13.9 million overseas. Worldwide, both bring the movie’s total to $34.7 million. I know what you are thinking, that’s not much. At all. In fact, some may even consider this a flop. But let’s add in the budget here — $4 million. Hey, a profit of over $30 million isn’t bad. Plus hear us out…

Critical Acclaim: At Rotten TomatoesThe Kids Are All Right has a remarkable score of 93% and outstanding reviews. So, what was the problem? A few things here. The movie is (shockingly) 10 years old, movie tickets weren’t what they are today. Additionally, heartfelt comedy-dramas don’t typically make much at the box office. It’s big blockbuster pictures that take all the attention.

About the Role: That said, this movie is clearly underrated, and also way ahead of its time! In the movie, Mark Ruffalo stars as Paul Hatfield, a man who donated his sperm to a lesbian couple. He meets his teenage children after they seek him out and quickly forms a bond with them.

Simply the Best: This isn’t a typical role we know Ruffalo to star in, but this is also why we love the movie. It’s always fun and refreshing to see our favorite actors outside of projects we are used to seeing them in.
