2. Sam’s hope

Chuck had Sam and Eileen trapped, hence one of the motivators for the title of this episode of Supernatural. As it turns out, chuck was ready to help himself after his sister refused. He was bound and determined to figure out why he was being held on this planet because of the connection to Sam and the little wound that could.

It wasn’t long after his and Eileen’s attempts to dig out the problem, that Chuck realized Sam was holding onto hope and that was preventing the healing for them both. Sam believed everything would be OK and that was keeping them tied together while he tried to defeat the Almighty.

Chuck’s solution to the problem was a deep and heavy immersion into what would happen next if Sam and Dean proceeded with their ideas to trap or defeat him. It was then that we got some pretty dismal scenes.

The stuff to come showed us the deaths of Claire, Castiel trapped in a Ma’lak box because taking the mark drove him insane, and the whole thing wrapped up with vampire Sam’s head coming off courtesy of Bobby, right after vampire Dean killed Jody. That was it. That was the ending.

We all know Chuck loves his monsters so this was one way to make it happen. What a combination to have the heroes become the villains in the end. Chuck’s monster lust was satisfied, even if the brothers went out together in the end.

Still, the main point was what counted. Chuck wanted Sam to understand that without him, the monsters would have free reign. Sam knew this would be true and that’s why he couldn’t let their idea to trap Chuck carry on. After everything Dean and Cass went through to make it happen, Sam let it all go.

That was a surprise to some, but Chuck was thrilled that Sam lost hope. But don’t worry! This isn’t the first time on Supernatural we’ve seen a character decide there was no way forward. They still decided that they would find another way.

They may not know what the hope is now, but there will be something. To me, it seems the only plausible solution is to find a replacement for Chuck. Someone or something else that can hold the balance between good and evil in the world. Amara has power like that, but is she willing? Maybe Jack will shed some light on the next step.

1. Dean’s prayer

My favorite moment of this episode of Supernatural was Dean’s prayer to Castiel. Waking up to find him gone, Dean immediately felt the reality that he may have met his end and they would never see each other again.

The last many episodes have been plagued with the stress between Dean and Cass. We’ve all waited and wished for a resolution and I think we all knew it would come eventually. Cass, in his wisdom, drew the line a while ago. He tried incredibly to win Dean’s forgiveness and favor but determined he had done his best.

Dean is but a human, however. And because of that, he did what so many of us mistakenly do and expected there would always be a later to make things right. It was clear he let go of his anger to a degree and showed sadness when Cass left before. His stern tone with him on the phone showed he was worried about him when he was off on his own for a time.

But when he thought Cass was gone for real, he was filled with remorse and crumbled to the ground with worry and pain. He decided to pray in the hopes that Cass was still alive somewhere to hear his overdue apology and forgiveness.

The long-standing bromance nature between these two characters has fueled many a theory about the friends.  We’ve seen many episodes where it was clearly inferred that they have deep feelings for each other and they are family. Supernatural has even joked about it within the storyline and through other characters’ observations of the pair.

Fans have begged for the show to make a statement and clarify the insinuations once and for all. The internet is at capacity with presumptuous fan-created memes, art, and stories (some are even pretty graphic). But I believe this scene is as close as Supernatural will ever come to telling us what the reality is. Through thick and thin, these two are as devoted to each other as Sam and Dean.

Truly nothing will end that bond and this proclamation of sorrow and regret cements it well. With that, the two are back in each others’ good graces and Cass recognized Dean’s speech with a manly “I heard your prayer.” The only thing missing here was a literal “I love you.” They are some kind of pair, together forever.
