Birds of Prey opened in theaters this past weekend to low numbers, but did it actually perform that poorly?

To say Birds of Prey failed at the Box Office is unfair. While it’s true that the Suicide Squad spinoff opened below early estimates and projections, it’s not the lowest DC opening of all-time for Warner Bros. as many are reporting. Here are the true totals.

Birds of Prey opened to $33.2 million domestically and $48 million overseas, for a grand total of $81.2 million. Compare this to DC’s Jonah Hex, starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, which gathered a box office total of $10.9 million throughout its entire stay in theaters against a $47 million budget.

Sure, Jonah Hex may be from 2010 and the comic book world has since expanded massively, but if you want to call Birds of Prey DC’s biggest failure, at least get your facts straight. Of course, this isn’t to say we didn’t all have higher expectations for Birds of Prey. It is true that it underperformed, but it will come out with a profit, eventually. A small profit, sure, but it’ll make its money back.

According to Deadline, the movie was projected to earn anywhere from $50 to $55 million domestically, yet it didn’t even reach $35 million. Estimates were also a worldwide total of at least $110 million, but it only made just over $81 million. Could it be possible that we set our expectations too high?

Was it fair to set this bar that tall and compare it to films such as Joker, Wonder Woman, Aquaman or even Marvel’s Captain Marvel? For an rated-R movie based on side characters we aren’t used to seeing in the spotlight, I say Birds of Prey did just fine!
