4. Gotta Kick It Up

The next DCOM is throwing it back even more to almost 20 years ago. Released back in 2002, Gotta Kick It Up is easily one of the most overshadowed DCOMs. Featuring a superb cast and focusing on a group of Latina girls, this one deserves to be talked about more than it has been. Of all the films on this list though, this was one of the first that came to my mind.

Gotta Kick It Up follows a dance team who after getting a new instructor, realizes how much their Latin culture can help them win a competition. Even though it’s been a few years since I’ve watched this movie, I remember it having strong ties to Latina culture and focusing on the importance of working together/friendship. Additionally, Gotta Kick It Up features a group of strong-willed girls, working to get what they want.

Gotta Kick It Up is remembered for having a cast of almost entirely Latina actresses but it’s also for featuring some future stars including America Ferrera and Camille Guaty. While it seems to be forgotten among other Disney films, it’s still one of the best to come out of the early 2000’s era.

Hopefully, for Galentine’s Day, you decide to give it a chance. This one has an even shorter run time of an hour and 15 minutes so this could be another one you start the night out with.
