The Punky Brewster reboot trailer is here, and it is packed with throwbacks that will have you screaming “Punky Power” like it’s the 80s.

If you grew up in the late 80s, Soleil Moon Frye’s Punky Brewster might have been one of your idols. She was the type of TV character who was completely unapologetic about just being her own, unique self; and she always managed to find the bright side of things. That undying optimism was particularly impressive, given that we originally met her as an orphan before she wormed her way into Henry’s heart.

When the Punky Brewster reboot was first announced as part of NBCU’s streaming service, Peacock TV, the news was met with equal parts excitement and terror. As with any attempt to bring back an old favorite, there’s always the chance to completely ruin our childhoods.

Luckily, though, if the Punky Brewster teaser trailer released by Peacock is any indication, we’re all about to get hit with a blast of Punky Power when the series launches. So, what’s got us so excited? Let’s break it down.

First, and most importantly: Soleil Moon Frye is back as Punky Brewster, and it looks like she never left the character. Even in just this 25-second clip, there are glimpses of that personality we fell in love with way back when. Maybe the actress was secretly Punky all along.

Next, there’s the fashion sense. Punky Brewster was always known for her mismatched, brightly-colored, and totally cool clothes. She often wore two different shoes, a trademark to which Peacock’s Punky Brewster trailer gives a not-so-subtle nod. Throw in the jean overalls, and you’ve got yourself a wardrobe that’s built on the original Punky brand.

Even as a mom, Punky Brewster isn’t quite grown up. As a child, Punky Brewster didn’t take adults, even the sometimes-grouchy Henry, too seriously. How perfect, then, that the reboot teaser shows her drinking straight out of the orange juice carton, spitting back into a glass, and quipping, “I had to grow up…ish.”

She has a Golden Retriever! One of the most beloved characters from the original Punky Brewster series, aside from Punky herself, was Brandon the Wonder Dog. Brandon, a Golden Retriever, was with Punky when her mom abandoned her and was basically her shadow. We’re very excited to see how the newest pup measures up.

Even the Punky Brewster logo has maintained its Punky Power. At the end of the Punky Brewster trailer, the series’ title is spelled out in multiple bright colors—just like the original. It’s not quite the same fun font as before, but I guess we can assume our leading lady writes a bit more neatly these days than she might have at eight years old.
