The Baker and the Beauty: 5 best scenes from Season 1, Episode 2
By Mads Lennon
2. Noa talks to her mom on the phone
While this was a heartbreaking scene, Nathalie Kelly is excellent in it, and it sheds light on her character. Noa’s mom calls her to wish her a happy birthday, and at first, it seems like a reasonably normal phone call, but then she calls her daughter “Noa-Boa” and asks her if she’d like a doll for her birthday.
She offers to take her for tea in the plaza, like her favorite book character, Eloise. We learn that Noa’s mother is living in an assisted living facility and is struggling with dementia or some other kind of mental illness. She doesn’t seem to remember how old Noa is or much else about her.
It’s hard to see Noa crying when she talks to her. She later reveals that her mother had a mental breakdown at one of her birthday parties in the past, which is why she now hates her birthday.
1. Daniel and Noa go for a moonlight swim
In an effort to cheer her up, Daniel persuades Noa into ditching her party. Why not? It is her birthday, and if she doesn’t want to be there, she shouldn’t have to. Instead, Daniel and Noa head to the beach for a little extra time together.
The gorgeous night results in romantic stargazing and a smoldering kiss. Noa even suggests they go for a swim sans clothing. While in the water, Noa invites Daniel to come with her to Portugal, where she’ll be filming a movie. The episode ends before Daniel can answer, but we’re hoping he says yes!
