5 – Why you should watch Godless

Godless is a limited series that brings viewers inside a small, isolated 1880s mining town in New Mexico called La Belle. It follows the infamous criminal Frank Griffin and his crew of outlaws as they stop at nothing to track down a man, Roy Goode, who betrayed them prior to the series’s start—and has fled to the La Belle where he’s one of the few men in town.

The conflict between Frank and Roy is presented in a non-linear format and keeps viewers hooked as they learn more about how these two came to be at odds with one another across multiple episodes. Though Roy’s story is a main piece of overall plot, it’s the women of La Belle who are the town’s strength.

La Belle is to Godless as Birmingham is to Peaky Blinders. The home town setting sets the stage for the drama but is in many ways a character all its own. The women of La Belle are protective of their underdog community and work to use their home-turf landscape to their advantage. If action and violence help hook you into a new show, you’ll definitely see that in Godless, but be aware that there is some violent, disturbing imagery over the course of the series that’s a bit more gory than what is seen on Peaky Blinders.

Because Godless is a limited series, meaning it only filmed one season. There are seven episodes in total, all of which are currently available to stream on Netflix.
