Top 10 characters the Arrowverse completely botched
4. Cat Grant
Introduced in the first season of Supergirl, this media mogul is the epitome of first-world arrogance, a prima donna with no problem flaunting her superiority over lesser life forms. She constantly berates those around her, expects her employees to attend to her every trivial need, and regularly references her past accomplishments as if they justify her abhorrent attitude. To cut to the chase, she’s a despicable caricature who seems to have leapt out of the worst romantic comedy you can possibly imagine and invaded the Arrowverse.
On top of that, the writers have the nerve to treat this woman as an inspirational figure. The titular heroine repeatedly looks to her for advice and inspiration, both in and out of costume. Later, she even leaves her magazine company and becomes the personal advisor to the president. Yes, I’m serious.
The show urges us to look at her success and admire it as a momentous victory for women and feminism as a whole. As such, the creators use her as the mouthpiece for topical progressive buzz words and pop culture references. Oh, look at how she sticks it to her detractors! Isn’t she so powerful and enlightened?
It’s like if Spider-Man started idolizing J. Jonah Jameson. The entire exercise is insulting, no matter which side of the political aisle you reside on, and the performance at the center of it makes everything so much worse.
Far and away the most established actor on Supergirl in its first season, Calista Flockhart is also the most unbearable to watch. Her soft tone, slow speech, permanent scowl, and hands either on her hips or daintily holding an accessory lend a cartoonish condescension to the character, as if she can barely deign to speak to the unwashed masses of Planet Earth. Every time she parts her pursed lips to espouse some pseudo-knowledge, you just want to strangle her. She’s undoubtedly the most irritating individual to ever disgrace this branch of the Arrowverse, and that’s saying a lot.
