6. Why you should watch Dollface
Who’s in it: Kat Dennings, Brenda Song, Shay Mitchell, Esther Povitsky
What it’s about: After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Jules (Kat Dennings) finds herself battling her unpredictable imagination as she attempts to elbow her way back in the lives of her friends Madison (Brenda Song) and Stella (Shay Mitchel).
However, she discovers things can’t immediately go back to normal with the best friends she left behind in favor of her relationship. Jules becomes friends with her eccentric coworker Izzy (Esther Povitsky) and tries her best to prove to her group of friends that she’s a loyal, present friend, not a fair-weather bestie.
Why you should watch: On paper, Dollface and Younger have completely dissimilar foundations, but at their core, they are both feel-good shows about the power of female friendship. Jules may not have the high stakes Liza accepts in fibbing about her age, but she, too, reconciles with the choices she’s made that have hurt the most important women in her life. Both shows have incredible casts and clever writing, making the transition from one to the other seamless and natural.
Without a doubt, Dollface was one of the biggest, most pleasant surprises of 2019. The perennial great Kat Dennings (whom we loved on 2 Broke Girls) leads a knockout comedy that deserved so much more attention than it initially received.
Thankfully, Hulu renewed Dollface for a second season, giving those who missed out on the first season of 10 episodes a chance to check out what they’ve been missing. Honestly, if you haven’t seen Shay Mitchell’s revelatory comedic performance in this show, you have a pleasant surprise heading your way.
Where you can watch: The first season of Dollface streams exclusively on Hulu. Season 2 will premiere sometime next year.
