Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist deserved to be nominated for these 2020 Emmys

The nominations for the 2020 Emmys are out; and as usual, there are about a million reasons to rage about the injustices. It seems like every year, awards shows become more and more recycled with the same handful of shows getting all the glory, while plenty of other deserving series get snubbed.

It’s boring, it’s exhausting, and it’s really just a waste. Granted, with more and more content to choose from every year, the decision must be extremely difficult—but with hardly any big surprises, the attempt at being fair by considering the huge amount of TV out there is too much of a leap.

This year, one of the key series missing from the list of Emmy nominees was Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. With so much talent involved in one of NBC’s latest hits, completely leaving the series out just didn’t make any sense.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist deserved Emmys nods in these 5 categories

There are so many areas where Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist should have fit into the nominations for the 2020 Emmys. But it didn’t. So, let’s take a look at just a few.

First up: Since the series is technically a dramedy, pick either of the following: Outstanding Comedy Series or Outstanding Drama Series. From top to bottom, this show was extremely well-done; and every single person involved in the project deserved a nod. Putting it in the best overall category—for literally either type of series—would have made perfect sense.

Next, while all of the Zoey’s actors were phenomenal, no one had to go through more physical and emotional whiplash than series star Jane Levy. Again, you could take your pick either way with whether she would be considered a comedic actress or a dramatic one. But as far as the 2020 Emmys go, Levy’s wildly hilarious performance in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Glitch” certainly deserved the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series accolades.

And what about that insane one-shot production of “American Pie” in the season finale? Take your pick between the Emmys for directing and cinematography: Or, if there was really any justice in this world, how about the concept of both?

That just leaves the most obvious category of all: Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming for none other than the incomparable Team Dance, led by Mandy Moore. Even if the excuse for not putting the series into any of the other categories winds up being that it didn’t cleanly fit into drama or comedy, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist certainly qualifies as “scripted” and definitely had the best choreography on any series at all this past season.

Team Dance met every single challenge—from choreographing while using American Sign Language, to massive group numbers, to using tables and even coffins as meaningful props. So, honestly, Emmys should be thrown at every single one of those pieces. It’s not even a question!

Basically, all that’s left to say is Emmys, you’ve got some explaining to do…You had these five chances (and more!) to do the right thing but didn’t.
