Two Netflix favorites and other recently canceled shows

Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj

Though not a popular series, it managed to survive six seasons before Netflix axed it.  The show’s host Hasan Minhaj announced the decision Tuesday on Twitter saying:

"“What a run.  @patriotact has come to an end. I got to work with the best writers, producers, researchers, and animators in the game.” He continued, “my 2 babies were born and grew up with the show. TY to @Netflix and everyone who watched. Now it’s time to return these screens to Best Buy”"

Why was it canceled?

I’m sure COVID-19 had little nothing to do with it, but ratings did. Netflix doesn’t release viewership figures unless it’s a success like Stranger Things, You, or Extraction.  Petitions have already started to urge Netflix to reverse its decision.

It’s no secret, Netflix hasn’t figured out the right formula for talk/variety shows. Every one of their original shows for this particular genre is canceled. Will they ever be able to break the curse and have a successful talk series?

Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj is the first weekly US talk show to be hosted by an Indian American.  It broke barriers and gave rival shows The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, some competition.

Tosh.0

There’s a purge going on at Comedy Central, and sadly Tosh.0 is one of its casualties. Initially renewed for four more seasons back in January, ViacomCBS shocked everyone when they reversed this decision.

Similar to E!’s The Soup, Tosh.0 has been one of the network’s most popular shows since debuting in 2009. Each episode of the first season garnered over 1 million viewers. Hosted and created by Daniel Tosh, it featured Tosh giving hilarious commentary on viral clips and popular trends.

ViacomCBS, now under new leadership, is shifting its focus from live-action scripted series to animated series. Beavis and Butt-Head, Clone High, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and Jodie, a spin-off of Daria is currently in the works.

Earlier this month The Other Two and South Side were moved from Comedy Central to HBO Max. The only remaining scripted series is Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.  Will it be canceled next?

"“I look forward to doing an animated reboot of my show on MTV in 25 years,” Tosh said in a statement."

The final season of Tosh.0 will feature 10 episodes beginning on Sept. 15 and concludes on Nov. 24, 2020.
