7. Grey Gardens

Original release date: Grey Gardens premiered on HBO on April 18, 2009.

Critical acclaim: The film holds an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. Specifically, Barrymore’s performance earned some of the best reviews of her career.

Grey Gardens garnered 17 nominations of the Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Movie or Miniseries for Jessica Lange, among others. Barrymore was nominated in the same role as Lange at the Emmys and won Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe awards for her performance.

About the role: Based on the true story and 1975 documentary of the same name, Barrymore stars in Grey Gardens as Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale, who moves into a decaying East Hampton mansion with her mother, “Big” Edith Bouvier Beale (Jessica Lange). The film tells their story in real-time and through flashbacks to pivotal moments in their lives, including the filming and premiere of their documentary.

Why it’s the best: For an actress who started working at 11 months old and had her breakthrough as a child, maintaining and building on that success isn’t something that’s common in Hollywood. But Drew Barrymore has always been an unstoppable force that defied odds.

Over 30 years into a successful career, Barrymore scored the best reviews she’d received so far and had the bragging rights to high-profile awards and nominations for Grey Gardens. Time and time again, Barrymore proves that it’s never too soon or too late to leave your mark.
