The Orville is in danger of losing a very loyal audience. Are the show’s ambitions at the expense of loyal fans?

It’s been a while since we’ve laughed watching executive producer and star Seth MacFarlane’s epic series The OrvilleIn fact, it’s been nearly a year and a half since a new episode graced the Fox screens.

Given the extended break, one starts to wonder when enough is enough. Is The Orville at risk of losing an addicted, loyal fanbase? For those hoping for good news, MacFarlane has provided a recent update about the series.

The Orville delay has more than one cause

First and foremost, it’s old news that The Orville is jumping from Fox to Hulu. Additionally, everyone is aware of the impacts COVID-19 has had on society. Television production has slowed to snail’s pace, and society has marched on relatively unaffected. With that in mind, one has to wonder why there isn’t more of an urgency to get things moving.

To those questions, Macfarlane has released a statement, “All I can say is we are working on it. We’re working on it very hard, we got hit by this just like everyone else but we’re working on it.”

Is it more than that? Even though “late 2020” was the original prediction for new episodes, could there be something else causing issues?

MacFarlane has gone on record as saying the move from Fox to Hulu was all based on his ambitions. He basically said Fox couldn’t handle the production payload for network television, and things needed to move on to a streaming service. Enter Hulu. Has MacFarlane turned The Orville into a monster that can’t live up to the expectations?

Waiting for a great show to return is one thing, but this could be an unrecoverable situation. At a certain point, everybody gets over a breakup, and the good times are a thing of the past. You barely remember her name at some point. Quick, name more than two characters from The Orville. Couldn’t do it, could you?

Will fans stick around for The Orville to return? Will there be enough left for Hulu to continue the show’s previous success and musical genius? MacFarlane is risking a lot, and it may just backfire.
