Watch an all-new episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country tonight

To quote a line from the hit song, “Alexander Hamilton,” Aaron Burr sings, “And the world is gonna know your name What’s your name, man?” On last week’s episode of Lovecraft Country, the entire world knows the name and story of Hippolyta Freeman.

After arriving at Ardham, Hippolyta discovers the “Orinthia Blue” comic, which means George was at the castle before his death. Days later, Hippolyta figures out how to work the gold orrery and discovers it holds a key with coordinates, which lead to Hiram’s observatory.

At the observatory, Hippolyta cracks the code of how to work the machine thanks to her genius skills in math and science. However, two cops confront Hippolyta and before they can hurt her, Atticus bursts in and fights the cops. After shooting one of the cops in the scuffle, Hippolyta is pulled into a portal that appears against the wall.

Hippolyta travels through a wormhole to another planet and met by a tall, powerful black woman. The mysterious woman identifies herself as “I am” and encourages Hippolyta to pick where she would like to be. Hippolyta jokingly asks to be onstage with Josephine Baker in Paris, and that’s exactly where’s she transferred.

After a powerful conversation about freedom and identity with Josephine, Hippolyta screams, “I am Hippolyta,” and she’s transferred to an African village, where she fights with other female warriors against male soldiers.

Finally, Hippolyta ends up by the side of her husband, George. It’s here where Hippolyta has an epiphany. She tells George about their love, but also admits she had to hold herself back from her true identity and keep all of her rage within.

It’s a powerful moment the ends with Hippolyta bringing George to a new planet. Hippolyta is given the choice to either stay or return home, and she chooses the latter.

Back in Chicago, Leti and Ruby have a forgiving conversation, but both women are hiding secrets. Leti knows about the Book of Names and may be carrying Tic’s child while Ruby knows about magic and may be helping Christina.

Atticus also discovers his dad is gay, and realizes that Montrose beat him not because he thought Tic was soft, but due to the fact that Montrose could not handle the fact that he was gay and did not want Tic to be the same way. At the end of the episode, it is Tic, not Hippolyta, that escapes the portal. He’s carrying a copy of “Lovecraft Country,” but the author is none other than his Uncle George. Tic flees the scene after he hears police sirens on the way.

Lovecraft Country Season 1, Episode 8 preview

So far, all of the major adult characters have had episodes dedicated to their backstories. However, Diana has had little character development up until this point. That will all change tonight as Diana will be confronted by police after they discovered her comic at the scene of the observatory. Plus, it’s still a race between Atticus and Christina to find the missing pages of the Book of Names.
