5 top takeaways from the Snowpiercer NYCC 2020 panel
What we learned about Snowpiercer Season 2 during the NYCC 2020 panel
Snowpiercer is one of those shows that had a lot of stop-start whether it was change of network (and back again), change of showrunner, and just various delays. We finally got the first season earlier this year and it proved to be worth the wait.
Now we can’t wait for the second season. The good news is we now have an idea of what to expect and when the show will premiere.
Snowpiercer Season 2’s cast took to NYCC 2020 through a virtual panel. Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connelly got the chance to talk the first season and what it means for the second season, we got to hear from showrunner Graeme Manson, and newcomers (to the series) Sean Bean and Rowen Bouchard.
Check out the panel here. It’s only a 31-minute panel and gives a lot of great information, but if you don’t have time for that, scroll down for the biggest takeaways from the panel.

We don’t have too long to wait for Snowpiercer Season 2. The benefit of all the delays is that the renewal happened before we even watched the first season. TNT was just so impressed with the work. So, filming got underway right away and didn’t suffer from the coronavirus shutdowns.
Snowpiercer Season 2 will premiere on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. There are 10 episodes to the season and they’ll air weekly on TNT. There was also a teaser of the season in the form of a trailer. You can check it out at the end of the panel above.
Sean Bean loves playing this bad guy
Sean Bean wasn’t initially cast as Mr. Wilford at the beginning of Season 1. It looks like the show always knew he would join, but at first, it was impossible to case Bean when there wasn’t a second season confirmed.
Of course, we’re curious whether Bean is going to survive during Season 2, but the big thing for Bean is the type of role he’s playing. He’s looking forward to a role that is such a formidable villain. This is a man who doesn’t care about doing dastardly stuff for the sake of his own survival.
There are certainly some exciting scenes between Wilford and Melanie coming up. Wilford wants order, but Melanie wants to focus on science. The two aren’t going to go together.
Andre Layton has some difficult choices to come
Daveed Diggs talked about Layton’s change in character in Snowpiercer Season 2. We watched Layton try to be the voice of reason and justice during the first season, but now he’s taking over the train. Now he’s going to need to make some major choices, and they’re difficult ones.
There will hopefully be some excellent scenes between Layton and Melanie. After all, Layton now understands all the hard choices Melanie has had to make to keep people safe.
Continued focus on current-day events
Snowpiercer is a dystopian future, but there are a lot of topics raised that we see today. We didn’t realize at the time we’d see so much of current events with the quarantine and losing control, but there were still important topics.
This is going to continue. Diggs talked about how the show looks at what happens when people are passive in the things that happen to them.
Alexandra Cavill gets a bigger role
The end of Snowpiercer Season 1 brought this second train. A young girl walked through and asked for Melanie Cavill. She is Melanie’s thought-dead daughter, Alexandra.
We’re going to get to know more about Alexandra throughout Snowpiercer Season 2. It’s time to find out how she was saved, what her upbringing has been like, and what she wants from her mother.
