Ammonite: Where to stream the Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet movie

What is Ammonite about?

The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus claims that, “the chemistry between Saoirse Ronan and a never-better Kate Winslet” helps the film “transcend its period romance trappings.” In this period romance biopic about famed paleontologist Mary Anning, there’s always more going on beneath the surface, especially when it comes to love.

With that said, it’s not entirely a true story. As PopSugar reports, the actual personal life of Mary Anning remains a bit of a mystery and so, don’t expect Ammonite‘s strongest area to be historical accuracy. It’s more about the romance.

In a tweet, director Francis Lee explained his bold choice to take certain creative liberties with the film, saying:

"As a working class, queer film maker, I continually explore the themes of class, gender, sexuality within my work, treating my truthful characters with utter respect and I hope giving them authentic respectful lives and relationships they deserve."

Reported in Screen Daily, Lee also revealed he “took that idea and I ran with it” and “thought very hard” about who he could “suggest Mary might have had a relationship with, because there is no evidence of that.” He went on to say, “The only evidence is she had friendships with women,” adding, “And I thought that making her have a relationship with a man in a patriarchal society where women are subjects of men, it didn’t feel right.”

In other words, the human truth was more crucial to the story’s point than the historical facts. So what’s the story, you ask?

"1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever."
