The Outpost Season 3 premiere was full of action, politics, and romance

The Outpost Season 3 on The CW is finally here Blackbloods! And the premiere gave fans a lot to unpack. There was drama, action, politics, and romance. Everything you could ask for in a fantasy show.

Caution: There are spoilers in this post if you haven’t watch The Outpost Season 3 premiere yet. The episode is now available on The CW App.

And just before the Season 3 premiere, Deadline announced that the CW has picked up The Outpost for an additional season of 13 episodes! But apparently, they aren’t calling it a Season 4, but rather an additional 13 episodes of Season 3. We knew the actors were back filming more of The Outpost but it’s nice to know the CW has officially picked it up.

More from CW

When we last left The Outpost, Talon had found out that more of her people, the Blackbloods, existed. Unfortunately, they betrayed her and took over The Outpost for themselves. Season 3 picks up about 39 days after that event and we get to see what’s become of our favorite characters.

The Outpost Season 3 premiere and politics

The Season 3 premiere of The Outpost kicked off with a bang and the entire episode seemed elevated from what we’d seen of this show previously. Perhaps because we’ve grown to know the characters and the world now, perhaps there was an increase in budget, but whatever the reason the show is better than ever.

One of the most intriguing elements of the premiere was an underlying sense of politics and alliances that was woven through. Talon had allied herself with the Blackbloods, appearing to be a traitor to her friends. However, as the episode goes on it’s revealed that she’s only with the Blackbloods to give her friends their best chance of survival.

Talon serves Zed in order to keep the more vicious sect of Blackbloods called the Black Fist from taking over. If they were to take control then Gwynn, as well as the rest of the humans, would surely die. Talon walks a fine line, attempting to convince Zed she’s on his side, while also stepping in to protect Gwynn, Garret, and Tobin.

Then there is the matter of the Blackblood high priestess that Talon is asked to bring through to The Outpost from The Plane of Ashes. Yavalla appears to be a kind leader and yet I am hesitant to fully trust her. She wants to take her people to a supposed paradise and promises Gwynn peace and freedom for her people as long as Gwynn keeps her people under control.

Unfortunately, the episode ends with Garett killing a Blackblood guard who had threatened Gwynn’s life, so it will be interesting to see how the politics and alliances unfold this season. It’s going to put Talon in a tough spot.

The Outpost provides some intense action

It’s a fantasy show, so of course, there is some expectation of action. Action isn’t a huge element of this episode but it’s definitely there.

The main action comes in the friction between Zed and the leader of the Black Fist. They almost come to blows earlier in the episode, but it ends before any real damage is done. However, the fight is picked up later.

Zed is surrounded by the Black Fist which leads to a pretty intense fight. Zed’s kinj allows him to control minds but he can’t control them all at once and he’s almost overpowered. Thankfully, Talon shows up and ends the fight in a sequence that sort of reminded me of Xena: Warrior Princess. I can’t be the only one who thought that?

Either way, Talon is one tough warrior and I hope we get to see more action sequences from her this season. And bonus points if she gets to fight with different weapons, and perhaps one day she can even have a Lu-Qiri demon of her own.

The Outpost finally gives us the romance we want

As great as the action is, another element we love in fantasy is the romance. Yes, I admit it, I’m a romantic. And this episode served quite a bit of romance.

There was a cute reunion of the Gwynn and Tobin relationship that had been set up last season. Gwynn is thrilled when he comes to rescue her and they have a sweet kiss in front of an uncomfortable Garret. During their escape, Gwynn and Tobin share another kiss, once again in front of an uncomfortable Garret. Poor guy. But I have to admit, I’m a huge fan of the Gwynn and Tobin romance. I think he fits with her better than Garret did and I hope they last.

Then there’s the sweet and hilarious Janzo. He doesn’t get romance in this episode but he does encounter a character that fans are already speculating may be his new love interest. A new character, Wren, comes to take over his lab and fans saw some sparks fly between the two. Only time will tell if it might turn into romance but Janzo definitely deserves some luck in the romance department since his last partner ended up being related to him. Yikes.

Now for the big one. There was major progress in the Garret and Talon relationship. Fans have been rooting for them since Season 1, and they finally shared their first kiss. After Talon saves his life Garret and Talon have a much-needed conversation where she reveals that she’s not a traitor, she’s actually trying to protect him, and she admits that she can’t hate him for what he did last season. He was brainwashed, after all, so I think we can all forgive him.

They then share a kiss and I can’t wait to see where this relationship goes. What I love about them is that even though Garret is a knight he fully accepts that Talon is more powerful and a stronger fighter than he is. It’s refreshing to see and I’m definitely on team #Garron.
