The trailer for Cobra Kai Season 3 is here. Here are 5 things we learned

With just a month to go before its release on January 8th, 2020, we now have a trailer for Season 3 of Cobra Kai. As a new fan who began watching the show upon the show’s arrival on Netflix in June, I’m excited!

I was immediately captivated watching a new generation of Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do students go head-to-head under the tutelage of the original Karate Kids, Johnny Lawrence, and Daniel LaRusso.

The intense rivalry came to a head in Season 2, when after a year of rising tensions between the students of both dojos, an epic showdown at school landed Sam LaRusso and Miguel Diaz in the hospital, with Miguel on life-support, and Johnny’s son Robby in trouble.

With both senseis forced to take a long, hard look at what lead them to this point, Daniel closed up Miyagi-Do while Johnny’s old mentor, John Kreese, stole Cobra Kai out from under him. How will things shape up in Season 3? Here’s what we learned from the Season 3 trailer of Cobra Kai.

Miguel survives

Of course, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. The relationship between Johnny and Miguel has always been at the forefront of the show. For as misguided as his teachings might be, Johnny has worked hard to change Cobra Kai’s image and do right by his students in a way that his old mentor John Kreese never could.

In doing so, he’s acted as a surrogate father toward Miguel, trying to rectify the mistakes he made with Robby. Although he blames himself for Miguel’s predicament, when Miguel wakes up, Johnny is given new life. Although Miguel feels discouraged by the prospect of a long recovery, Johnny assures him he’ll be there for him every step of the way.

What’s that mean for his relationship with Robby? Hard to say, as we don’t see them interact in the trailer, and we know that Robby will spend some time in juvenile detention following the fight.

Johnny and Daniel team up

Meanwhile, Daniel is also starting to realize the impact that his childhood feud has had on those around him, and early on in the trailer, we see him make amends with Johnny. In doing so, the pair team up to set a good example for their respective students.

The problem is that with John Kreese taking over as sensei of the new Cobra Kai, his influence on the dojo’s students further serves to make the conflict between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do worse before it gets better.

Unfortunately, Kreese isn’t the only one that they have to worry about, as one scene in the trailer sees them in a warehouse going up against a group of people that appear to be drug dealers.

Are these men cronies of Kreese or a new threat to karate in the Valley? While it’s not clear exactly how Daniel and Johnny end up in this mess, in the scene preceding that one, Daniel’s wife Amanda feels the need to remind the boys they aren’t cops.

Relatives of Mr. Miyagi show up in the Valley?

In the final moments of the trailer, Daniel looks at a photo of him and Mr. Miyagi. In the voice-over, Daniel says that Mr. Miyagi taught him everything he knows as the scene changes to find Daniel talking to an older Japanese woman who smiles.

The scene then cuts to one of Daniel fighting an older Japanese gentleman, who looks none too pleased with him, at the Miyagi-Do dojo.

Are these long-lost children of Mr. Miyagi? Maybe like John Kreese, they’ve learned about the resurgence of the Miyagi-Do dojo to the Valley and have returned to meet the new management. Will they like what they see, or like Kreese, will they try and take the dojo away from Daniel?
