Everything we know about the Trickster premiere date, cast, and more

This has been the season of Canadian acquisitions. I’ll admit that I’m definitely not complaining as a fan of Canadian TV shows. The latest one to head to the U.S. is Trickster.

The CW has picked up the supernatural drama series, and it will premiere in January. What do you need to know about it? Why is it a must-watch of the new year? Here’s everything we know about Trickster so far.

Trickster premiere date

There isn’t much longer to wait for the new supernatural series. The Trickster series premiere will air on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 9/8c on The CW. The Flash and Superman & Lois won’t be ready until February 2021.

For those in Canada, the show has already begun. You can watch on CBC and CBC Gem—the free streaming app.

There are six episodes to the series. It’s billed as a miniseries, so there may only be one season. However, never say never, right?

Trickster cast

Joel Oulette plays the lead character, Jared. All he wants to do is keep his family afloat. His mom, Maggie, is played by Crystle Lightning, and his dad, Phil, is played by Craig Lauzon.

Also part of this excellent cast are:

  • Kalani Queypo as Wade
  • Anna Lambe as Sarah
  • Nathan Alexis as Crashpad
  • Joel Thomas Hynes as Richie
  • Gail Maurice as Georgina
  • Kirsten Johnson as Edna
  • Georgina Lightning as Sophia

The cast mostly involves Indigenous actors in Canada, which is a positive for the series. After all, the series is about an Indigenous team and his family and friends. It’s all about the culture, and that means we need the right people to play the roles.

Trickster synopsis

The series focuses on Jared, an Indigenous teen who is struggling with being a teenager, his dysfunctional family, and new supernatural abilities.

As well as going to school, he has an after-school fast-food job and he cooks ecstasy on the side. It’s all in an effort to support his mom, who struggles with an undiagnosed mental illness, and his painkiller addict father.

When he starts talking to ravens and seeing doppelgangers, Jared starts to fear he’s losing his mind. However, it turns out he’s gained some supernatural abilities and there’s more in store for him.

The series brings a lot of focus on the Indigenous way of life and the racism faced against them. There’s also the focus of systemic abuse and how they’re lost in the system, unsupported medically or educationally. Then there are the supernatural beliefs of the culture, which has gained a lot of praise.

It is based on a book series but deviates a little. It’s grittier and some of the characters are changed. It’s more than worth the watch, though.
