Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun

Laughter and relatability are like medicine for the soul during times of stress, and Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun really hits the bullseye on the comical but cringy days of high school. Chiyo Sakura is a sweet-spirited red-head with a big crush on the tall, stoic and handsome Umetarou Nozaki.

The twelve-episode anime starts off with Chiyo mustering up all her courage to tell Nozaki that she’s in love with him. After tightening her polka-dot pigtails, Chiyo confesses to Nozaki after school, just as the sun is setting through the class window. Romantic, right? Well, not so much.

Nozaki, while handsome and a gifted writer of a monthly romance manga, is wildly clueless when it comes to girls and normal social structure. He believes Chiyo’s confession to be that of a fan, rather than a romantic admirer and politely hands her an autograph.

Though confused and distraught, Chiyo refuses to give up and accepts Nozaki’s offer to help him work on his upcoming manga issues. Hoping to make her way from assistant to girlfriend, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun is a hysterically accurate look into the love lives of characters that, really, have no idea what they’re doing.

Based on the manga by Izumi Tsubaki, the 2014 slice-of-life anime rom-com is directed by Mitsue Yamazaki. A second season has not yet been confirmed and is unlikely as it’s been six years since the anime made its debut. But the show’s newfound popularity on Netflix may just be the incentive to get a continuation of the anime up and running again.

But, for now, this love story looks like it will safely remain as one of the shorter Netflix anime you can binge in a weekend.
