The Promised Neverland

Just like there are times for happy, care-free romances, there are times for dark, horrifying mysteries that get your blood pumping. Based on the manga by Kaiu Shirai, The Promised Neverland is a dark fantasy 2019 anime directed by Mamoru Kanbe and one of the most captivating on our list of Netflix anime you can binge in a weekend.

Children Emma, along with her best friends Ray and Normal have spent many years in the seemingly harmonious orphanage they call home: Grace Field House. Surrounded by other, well-loved children and allegedly adored by the woman they call, “mother,” Emma and her friends live in a paradise, running through the fenced-in fields, stuffing their bellies with delicious suppers and keeping their minds alive with clever games and puzzles to solve.

But, like all settings that seem too good to be true, there has to be a catch. And boy, is there. When one of Emma’s fellow orphans, Conny, is taken away from the house to be adopted, she leaves behind her favorite stuffed animal. Emma, being the genuinely good-hearted soul she is, leaves the safety of the house with her friend Norman to take the toy to Conny.

Grace Field House only has one rule for the children that live there: don’t go beyond the fence. And soon after breaking that rule, Emma and Norman discover that the paradise they’d been living in, is actually more akin to a terrible cage and monsters lurk behind the fake smiles of familiar faces.

Season 2 for The Promised Neverland is currently airing on Crunchyroll, so jump on this short-form anime before the bandwagon really takes off.
