No Game No Life

Of course, we had to include the inevitable Isekai anime, where characters are whisked away to their own version of heaven: a world completely centered around gaming. Sora and Shiro are two such characters in director Atsuko Ishizuka’s No Game No Life. The fantasy sci-fi is based on the manga by Yū Kamiya and first premiered in 2014.

Step-siblings Sora and Shiro share a passion, or perhaps unhealthy addiction, to gaming and are even renowned in the online gamer world as the undefeatable “Blank.”

The brother and sister eventually catch the attention of Tet, a god from “another reality” and Tet challenges them to a game of chess. Sora and Shiro win the match and, as a reward, are invited to live in an alternate gaming universe. Believing, like anyone would, that the whole offer is one big joke, they accept.

Soon, the two master gamers are summoned to a world by the name of “Disboard,” ruled entirely by the notion that anything and everything must be solved through games. If you harbor an appreciation for the vibrant, colorful masterpieces that often join hand-in-hand with many anime shows, then No Game No Life will not disappoint as an anime you can binge in a weekend.

The story, and visuals, are completely enchanting. There is an anime film adaptation of the story’s sixth light novel as well, No Game No Life: Zero, which takes place six thousand years before the events of the main series.
